Your asking different questions, Media is free from Microsoft, just download it-after-you have validated it using the CoA off your old drive. There is no such thing as non-authentic version of XP, just the CoA. You may have to phone MS during the validation procedure.

i believe the recovery disk can only run on the original computer. however, it may work if the replacement hard drive is exactly the same size as the original hard drive you had on the computer. you should be able to download and install windows media player after verifying that you do have an authentic copy of windows.

    good luck!

The shop messed up. You need to use the code on the back to reactivate the Windows Installation. Microsoft has a Genuine check that prevents you from installing Windows Media player onto computers that do not contain authentic windows installations. Your number one step should be to make your computer genuine again. You have a legitimate code, so you can go ahead and use that code to make your pc genuine. If that fails, call Microsoft using the number they gave you, and explain to them the whole situation. They will gladly reactive the code for you.

Once that is done, you can download Windows Media player for free and pass the genuine check without any problems.
