Sometimes. Depending on what the problem is you may be able into get your data off of it. One option is try into boot your computer from a linux disk. Knoppix is a popular choice. If that doesn’t work try taking the drive out of your computer & hook it up into a computer via usb with a special adapter like this http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-USB-DSC5-3-5-Inch-Converter-Adapter/dp/B000HJ99DI
If you cant get your data off that way then your pretty much SOL. There are recovery options out there if the data is extremely important but those can run about 3-5 grand.

Boot up with your floppy boot or your cd, & you can run a test on your system & boot to widows, or what ever OS.

You should try to put your drive as a secondary drive in a working desktop computer – ask a friend for help with this or a local Computer Shop if you need to. After that, you may try data recovery software but that’s not guaranteed to work for sure. If these don’t work, try to minimize usage of the drive since if it’s a physical problem, any running of the drive can make the problem worse and hurt your other chances.
More expensive, but much more capable are data recovery firms that will likely be able to recover your data for many different kinds of failures. The 3-5 grand mentioned earlier isn’t true. There are some good data recovery firms that charge that high, such as OnTrack or Seagate Data Recovery, but there are other good options that are more affordable and still have the experience such as ESS Data Recovery. You’ll probably want to call a few companies and ask for quotes. Also make sure they have policies that they don’t charge you for recovery work if they don’t recover your data.
